They’ve discovered Richard III’s skeleton but where’s his pension policy?

He would have probably been dead anyway somewhere between 45-50 years had he survived the Battle at Bosworth Fields in 1485 at just 32 years of age.

The average life expectancy of a male aged 32 in the 1400s was 45-50 years. By contrast, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) state that the average life expectancy of a 32 year old male in 2013 will live until almost 80 years of age – 79.4 to be precise.

So, apart from the fact that he was the Plantagenet King of England and would have been able to afford a healthy diet if he had beaten Henry Tudor at Bosworth Fields, he had no need to save for his retirement.

The 21st Century man or woman, aged 32 years, has no fear of a fatal blow to the head from an aspirational Tudor prince in the middle of a field!

On the one hand you may relax on that score because if you’re a man, you can expect to live until you are nearly 80 and if you are a woman, the life expectancy is to 83 years of age. These statistics are of course getting better all the time.

Just out of interest, the ONS state that 30 years ago, a man would live until aged 73 years and a woman 78 years. What on earth will it be in 2043?

Richard III had two valid reasons for not saving for his retirement – Firstly, he was the Plantagenet King of England and, secondly, he would have died before retirement anyway. However, in the 21st Century, we have no excuse and every reason to save like fury for retirement.

The modern reality is that you are very likely to reach retirement and also, when you do retire, you are very likely to enjoy many years before you pop your clogs. That’s because as you get older, your life expectancy extends your date of death!

Again, quoting the ONS, a 65 year old male is expected to live until 83 years and for a female it’s almost 86 years.

So, it does not take a rocket scientist to work out that a couple planning for their retirement need to provide for over 20 years of income after they give up employment.

Richard III would not have needed professional advice from a Chartered Financial Planner to help make sure that his retirement was properly provided for – he was too busy trying to fight off the Lancastrian forces led by Henry Tudor. However, most people in modern times do.

In 2013 there is both the motivation for people to make proper provision for their old age and the availability of professional advice.

Robin Melley, award winning chartered financial planner from Shropshire said, “I’m fed up with the number of people that I meet in my professional life who are ‘old and broke’ but could have been ‘elderly and comfortable’ if only they had sat down with a Chartered Financial Planner or a pension adviser to help create and implement a plan whilst they were working.”

The whole retirement pensions thing may seem daunting and complex, but the simple fact remains – you are not Richard III and you will probably live a long a healthy life and will therefore need to make sure that you sort out your retirement planning now.

Robin can now drive a tractor?

Robin can now drive a tractor?
Things Robin will do to raise money for Air Ambulance

A great day today (Sunday, 15th May 2011) driving a vintage tractor at the annual Morville Countryside Club Tractor Run.

The route took us around, what can only be described as, some of the most spectacular countryside in Shropshire. It was a fantastic day, which raised a few more quid for Midlands Air Ambulance based at RAF Cosford.
This is the first time that Robin had driven a tractor, never mind a vintage tractor. Tony Maiklem loaned him his ‘pride and joy’ which is a 1968 McCormick International. Tony painstakingly refurbished this over many years; and he was understandably a bit ‘iffy’ about letting a complete novice drive his favourite vintage tractor.
Thankfully, probably with more luck than judgement, Robin managed to get around the course without incident. Robin’s only complaint was that he couldn’t find where to plug his ipod into!

Don’t Quit!

Unfortunately, the author of this poem is unknown. However, it has always been a source of inspiration for me, particularly through challenging times:

Dont Quit!

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow-
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out-
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit-
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.
